Cape Cod Rail Trail

The Cape Cod Rail Trail is one of the easiest ways to experience the peninsula without spending the entire day in a car. Following the corridor of a former railway, the paved route connects communities and landscapes across a substantial part of the Cape.

For cyclists, it offers something particularly valuable in summer: the chance to travel through forests and between towns at a pace that feels completely different from busy roads.

You do not need to ride the whole trail

A common mistake is treating a rail trail as a challenge that must be completed end to end. Unless that is specifically your goal, choose a manageable section and combine it with lunch, a town visit or another local stop.

Bike rental businesses operate in several communities near the route, making the trail accessible even if you have not brought your own bicycle.

Plan for crossings and other users

Although much of the route is separated from road traffic, there are crossings and shared sections where attention is required. Walkers and other trail users also share the space.

Bring water and sun protection, particularly during warm weather. Conditions and temporary closures can change, so check local information before a longer ride.

For me, the Rail Trail is not simply exercise. It is a way of seeing Cape Cod at human speed, noticing woods, villages and small stops that disappear when you drive past them.
