Eastham

Eastham is an excellent choice if the natural side of Cape Cod matters more to you than nightlife or shopping. Located at the beginning of the Outer Cape, the town provides easy access to Cape Cod National Seashore while remaining convenient for trips north towards Wellfleet and Provincetown.

Two of the area’s best-known Atlantic beaches, Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach, lie within the national seashore. The red-and-white Nauset Light has also become one of Cape Cod’s most recognisable lighthouse images.

Bring or rent a bike

The Cape Cod Rail Trail passes through Eastham, making cycling one of the easiest ways to add variety to a beach-focused stay. You can ride for a few hours rather than committing to the entire route.

On the bay side, the landscape changes again, with tidal flats and calmer coastal scenery.

A base rather than a busy centre

Eastham does not revolve around one compact downtown in the same way as some Cape towns. That is part of the appeal if you want space and access to nature, although a car can make exploring considerably easier.

I would choose Eastham for a trip built around beaches, walking and cycling. Provincetown is still reachable for an excursion, but at the end of the day you return to somewhere noticeably quieter.
