Truro

Truro is one of the places where Cape Cod narrows and the landscape begins to dominate. Between Wellfleet and Provincetown, the town is surrounded by dunes, beaches and protected land, giving it a much quieter character than the Cape’s busier centres.

Highland Light is one of the main landmarks. The lighthouse stands near the Atlantic coast and reflects the long maritime history of this exposed section of Cape Cod.

Come for the landscape

Truro is not somewhere I would visit with a long checklist. The attraction is the combination of ocean, dunes, winding roads and small communities.

Much of the surrounding landscape forms part of Cape Cod National Seashore, so beach walks and outdoor time should be central to your plans.

Stay quiet or visit Provincetown

One advantage of Truro is its proximity to Provincetown. You can enjoy restaurants, galleries and activity there before returning to a considerably calmer base.

Accommodation and services are more dispersed than in larger towns, so planning ahead is useful, particularly in summer.

For me, Truro works best when you are deliberately trying to slow the trip down. It is a place for morning beach walks, long afternoons outdoors and evenings where the absence of a packed itinerary is part of the point.
