Chatham delivers much of what first-time visitors imagine Cape Cod should look like: weathered coastal buildings, a lighthouse, beaches, fishing boats and a walkable centre with an unmistakably New England atmosphere.
The town sits at the southeastern elbow of the Cape, where the coastline changes direction and the Atlantic has continually reshaped beaches and sandbars.
Start in the centre
Main Street is easy to explore on foot, with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. It can become busy in summer, but it remains an enjoyable place to wander rather than simply drive through.
Chatham Lighthouse and the nearby coast provide the classic postcard view. Conditions along this exposed shoreline can change, so always pay attention to local beach information and signs.
Watch the working harbour
Chatham is not just decorative. Fishing remains part of the town’s identity, and spending some time around the harbour gives you a better sense of the working Cape behind the holiday cottages.
Wildlife is another attraction, including seals that are often seen around local waters. Remember that Cape Cod’s seal population also forms part of a wider marine ecosystem that includes great white sharks, so follow official beach safety guidance.
Chatham works well for a day visit, but staying overnight lets you enjoy its streets and shoreline after the busiest daytime crowds have eased.
