Falmouth is one of the strongest bases on the Upper Cape, particularly if your plans include Martha’s Vineyard. But treating it only as a ferry gateway would miss a town with beaches, a lively centre and excellent cycling.
Main Street provides restaurants, cafés and shops in a walkable setting, while the wider town includes several villages and a substantial stretch of coastline.
Cycle the Shining Sea Bikeway
The Shining Sea Bikeway is one of the highlights of the area. Following a former railway corridor, it connects Falmouth with Woods Hole and passes through varied coastal scenery.
Woods Hole itself deserves time. Known internationally for marine science, the village also has a compact harbour atmosphere and ferry connections.
A useful island gateway
Ferries to Martha’s Vineyard make Falmouth particularly attractive if you want to combine Cape Cod with an island trip. Check current schedules, parking arrangements and reservation requirements before travelling.
Even without the ferry, Falmouth works well for several days. It is easier to reach from the mainland than the Outer Cape and can be a sensible choice when you want a coastal holiday without committing to the long summer drive towards Provincetown.
I would give Falmouth at least a full day before deciding it is merely somewhere to catch a boat.
