Wellfleet

Wellfleet is one of my favourite types of Cape Cod town: small enough to feel relaxed but interesting enough that you can spend an entire day without needing a long list of attractions.

The town is famous for oysters, and its harbour still reflects a strong connection with the water. Galleries and creative businesses add another side to Wellfleet, giving the centre an artistic character that fits naturally with the Outer Cape.

Atlantic beaches and kettle ponds

Much of Wellfleet lies within or alongside the Cape Cod National Seashore. This gives you access to dramatic Atlantic beaches and walking opportunities, but the town also has freshwater kettle ponds that provide a completely different landscape.

Rather than trying to visit every beach, choose one area and give yourself time to enjoy it.

Stay for the oysters

If you eat shellfish, Wellfleet oysters are an obvious local experience. Their reputation extends far beyond Cape Cod, and eating them close to where they are grown adds something to the occasion.

Wellfleet sits far enough out on the Cape that summer traffic should be considered when planning a day trip. I would happily stay here for a few nights, particularly if beaches, cycling and a slower pace matter more to you than nightlife.

It is the kind of place where doing slightly less often results in a better day.
