Sandwich

Sandwich is often the first Cape Cod town travellers encounter after crossing from the mainland, but it deserves more than being treated as somewhere to drive through. Founded in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest European-settled towns on the Cape and has a noticeably historic character.

The centre contains old houses, churches and leafy streets that feel very different from the beach-resort image found elsewhere on the peninsula.

Glass and gardens

The Sandwich Glass Museum tells the story of the town’s important glassmaking industry, while Heritage Museums & Gardens combines collections, gardens and outdoor space in a setting that can easily occupy several hours.

Closer to the coast, the Sandwich Boardwalk has long been a local landmark, crossing marshland towards the beach. Check current access conditions because coastal structures can be affected by storms and restoration work.

A useful first stop

Sandwich is particularly convenient if you are arriving late, leaving early or want to explore the Upper Cape without immediately joining the longer drive towards Provincetown.

I like it as an introduction because it reminds you that Cape Cod is not only about ocean beaches. History, marshes and old village streets are equally important parts of the landscape.

Give Sandwich half a day rather than simply passing the highway exits. It is a gentle way to begin exploring the Cape.
